The Sherlock and Watson shade solution concept is not just about protecting our customers from harmful UV rays or providing a perfect al-fresco dining area. We believe in extending the inside outside and bringing the outside inside. This idea is all about really enjoying the combination of both worlds, indoors outdoors and we harness the various design elements of our products to achieve this for each individual customer.

To create this indoor-outdoor living space and make it work well we design a shade solution to blend the existing building and outside spaces. Generally this requires a survey visit to take measurements, photographs and find out exactly what the customer wants. We then design a solution to match the ideas , dimensions and the budget.

We are committed to offering a personal service to our customers

Rain and Shade Sails

Rain and Shade Sails in the modern form originated in Australia in the 80’s, originally devised as protection from the intense UV rays were soon adopted by schools and public bodies. The free forms and sculptured designs of the sail now provide shade and designer cover at a multitude of locations from the funkiest surf shack to the prestigious champagne bars on International Grand Prix circuits.
Sherlock and Watson supply and install individual sails and multi sail designs. Sails are suitable for rain and / or shade creation almost anywhere; the private garden, a restaurant terrace or school playground. Sails are a contemporary, striking and elegant alternative to traditional awnings, our sails are designed and manufactured for the UK climate ,functional shade , and a focal point for al fresco living. Sails may be designed for all year or seasonal use , the installation points may be de-rigged and packed away, making the structure “semi-permanent” and “demountable”.
A shade sail is a fabric membrane (cut and stitched to form a shape with tensioning points at corners ) which is then attached to anchor points / fixings . A simple equilateral triangular sail has three fixings, a bespoke pentagon shaped sail, five fixings . A sail may be connected to an existing structure e.g: a building , a tree (by way of velcro straps. We do not harm trees !!) or a pergola. The sail may have it’s own fixings points installed such as wooden poles, stainless steel posts, a timber framework or a combination. Sails may be used inside buildings to create shade , a theme , or for pure decoration.
There are two types of sail - flat sails: these are 2 dimensional shapes similar to a large piece of plywood, the sail may be angled but it will always remain flat, although there is some tolerance for minor twisting. The other type is the 3 dimensional sail which is designed & manufactured to form a three dimensional curved shape, with a minimum of 4 fixings, these structures are rigged to a higher tension than flat sails and require strong fixing points.
